August 2016

Welcome to the August Driving Your Career Starts NOW/The Newsletter, showing you how you can direct your job search, manage your career, and even start out as a consultant.

The heat of summer is now here -- how does your garden grow? I'm a gardener and have been enjoying tomatoes from my own plants, yummy. A few months of careful watering, feeding (organic sea kelp!), pruning, and patience are being rewarded by fresh vegetables. And so it is with job search...so keep it going and you will get back what you put in.

Something new: audio files that walk you through a job search tip. Check out the audio file link below!

Q: "Is there a best time of year to do a job search?"

Answer:  I've had clients land jobs at the height of summer (one right now is deciding between two offers!), and right before Christmas, with start dates before December 31st! So look all year long, year-round.

Labor Day through October is a great time to make those connections, network your way into companies, and apply for jobs.

But then along comes November with Thanksgiving and end-of-year accounting activities AND holidays that go through to the end of December, so it's tougher for candidates to make connections in those last 6 weeks of the year. Companies are hiring but their people are simply preoccupied and racing around to events.

This is why I caution candidates to start revising their resume and LinkedIn profile way before September 1st, and instead do it now over the summer. This way you can "hit the ground running" right after Labor Day, giving yourself a longer runway for getting the right interviews (and offer!) before Thanksgiving. The time goes fast!

People are like stained glass windows: they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within.
