"Shorts" - assorted tips for job search today
Applying online: "Easy Apply" is a tempting route for you to apply for a job. Because so many use it, applications can come in too much, too fast to the person recruiting for the job, so they CAN turn it off. Recommended instead: apply directly to the company website. Best option, however: get to know someone at the company who can nominate you for an opening. "Get known so you can get nominated!"
Networking: Don't forget to ask your family "Who do you know at these target companies I'm focused on?" Or who do they know who might know someone there?
LinkedIn: Your ACTIVITY generals views, and more views means that LinkedIn shows your profile to more who are hiring. Don't let your profile just sit there: work it, get endorsements, post supportive comments to others' posts, add connections. Keep it alive.
Resume: Don't post your resume everywhere online...it can backfire in that such a resume is not customized to the needs of the companies who might view it...companies that might be a target for you. So they'll read it and think, "Meh, not really a fit", and go to the next resume they see. Instead, do a great job on your LinkedIn profile and then post the URL to it.
AI: So many are using AI tools now that the resumes are starting to all look alike, cover letters are sounding alike ("I was SO excited to see your opening..."), and more. Yes, LLMs are great tools BUT keep your marketing fresh by using language that fits you and not thousands of other people.
ATS scam alert: Are you answering a job posting only to be told "Your resume needs to be ATS-friendly and we charge only $___ for that!" Scam alert! The job isn't real, the scam IS.
Resume: Use Word and keep your resume column-free, so that when the company converts it to .txt to run it through their ATS system, it'll come out in a format that makes sense.
