Some quotes to fire up your job search

Although I'm not the biggest fan of so-called "inspirational quotes", because they don't always deeply feed the soul, sometimes words CAN make a difference if you carry them around in your head and heart for even a short while.

Here are some quotes from a book I'm compiling for those in job search. I hope a few of these - or maybe even several - rekindle your fire today if you need it to.

A year from now you may wish you had started today. —Karen Lamb

Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door. —Coco Chanel

Everything you want is on the other side of fear. —Jack Canfield

The thought manifests as the word; the word manifests as the deed; the deed develops into habit; and habit hardens into character; so watch the thought and its ways with care, and let it spring from love born out of concern for all beings… as the shadow follows the body, as we think, so we become. —Buddha

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves. —Carl Jung

Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get where you want to go, no one else. —Les Brown

Maybe you’re searching among the branches for what only appears in the roots. —Rumi

Pay attention to your gut feelings. If you see an opportunity that feels right, keep moving forward on it. Don't let others stop you. —Sarah Wuest

Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway. —Earl Nightingale

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. -—Mahatma Gandhi

You can't turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again. —Bonnie Prudden

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. —C.S. Lewis

No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. —Albert Einstein

It takes courage to grow up and be who you really are. —e. e. cummings

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. —Winston Churchill

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. —Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Tip from Joanne:

Have a REAL email signature,

not just your phone number

When you sign an email, especially if it's part of a job application, use a real email signature.

It gives your contact information to your contact or the employer. And it does a little marketing for you.

That means having the following elements:

  • your name
  • your email address
  • your LinkedIn URL
  • your phone number
  • And I think it should have your title and field

Here are a couple of examples. Make sure your signature looks MORE like this, including much more than just your phone number:

Thought of the Month

Believe you can

and you're halfway there.

Theodore Roosevelt

In Memoriam

I only just learned of the 2025 passing of a big supporter of this newsletter and of those in job search, Charles Innis of Paxton, Massachusetts. Chuck was an engineer who joined one of my job search networking groups in the Bay State, where I first met him. He decided to teach again, which he did for the last few years of his career, at WPI in Worcester. A book collector and library trustee in Paxton, so cheerful and funny, I'm sure his family and friends miss him very much.
