Help for when you’re between two career certainties

June 2025

Right now there are way too many gloomy clickbait articles and blogs about such things as AI replacing jobs or the numbers of tech layoffs or CEOs making outrageous demands of their teams or cuts in research money, and more.

After doing job search coaching for over 20 years, and having seen all kinds of ups and downs and perceived threats to the economy and forecasts of doom, I can say that most of the dire forecasts, whether they come from journalists or economists or politicos or oddly enough career coaches themselves, just do not come true.

"Divide by two and take the square root", I used to say about an old friend who exaggerated all the time. I'd urge you to remember that when you see these stories. And to focus on the sources that are predicting we'll be able to adjust and grow despite the hurdles. And learn new things along the way.

Those are the forecasts that do come true. The learning part: that's what his issue of this newsletter is about: learning how a new technology can help you. Follow-through stats on AI interviews say that you can increase your level of success in getting the next interview go from 28% with resume only, to 53% resume and solid AI interview skills.

That's good news, yes?

Now, back to our main topic in this special Interview Issue: AI-driven interviews and salary negotiation, both on this page.

3 Ways to Prepare for an AI-Driven Interview

Not too long ago, job interviews came in few flavors: in-person, via Zoom or similar platform, by phone (yes, some still were); 1:1 or 1:multiple members of the team, occasionally recorded using Hire View or similar tool.

But employers are finding themselves overwhelmed with candidate applications. Applicant Tracking Systems help -- an early version of AI in action -- but today, more than just the resume needs to be evaluated. The emphasis is shifting much more in favor of "one-way" interviews, where employers see and hear your stories.

Thus the ascendance of the video interview. Today we have AI-driven interviews where it's just you and the lens on your laptop (I advise using your laptop vs your phone). These are recorded, so that the AI system, as taught by its humans, can evaluate your content and behavior. So don't forget to smile when appropriate!

There's also "copiloting" where a human AND AI are doing the interview with you. And yes, clients are telling me they still ARE getting the classic one-on-one with another human type interviewing, whether in person or via video platform.

So what's different? HR and hiring managers (GMs) are counting on the allegedly more "impartial" judgement of the algorithm. AI looks at keyword usage, soft skills, tone, and more, then gives a score to the HR or HM human involved.

So do the following for best outcome -- getting next interviews:

  1. Practice telling your success stories. Out loud. To yourself at first, using your phone or other device to record you. Make sure you are using industry keywords, and that you relate your results back to what this company is looking for.
  2. When you play back your recording, see if you are varying your tone and "finishing your words" -- especially if the word ends in a consonant. Avoid "uptalking", which makes you sound uncertain of yourself.
  3. Practice using tools designed to help you ace these interviews by giving you feedback. I'm evaluating these now so I'd love your opinion in how it goes using them yourself: Yoodli, Speak O, Teal, Hire Logic, and ChatGPT's mic feature.

Yes, I work 1:1 with candidates in job search on their search and their interviews, and as a member of the Career Thought Leaders, make it part of my job to keep up with -- and help YOU keep up with -- the rapid changes in job search. Let me know how I can help.

Tip from Joanne:

Salary Negotiation WORKS

Recent stats (e.g., Indeed) show that professionals ARE negotiating for a higher salary once a job offer is made.

And that 12% are getting "significantly more" than what was initially offered, and 28% are getting slightly more.

So GO FOR IT! Employers expect it - if done right. Why "leave money on the table"? Or, "If you don't ask, you don't get".
